Waka Huia were wooden boxes used by the Māori to secure treasures, such as the red feathers of the huia bird, from rats and other pests. They were hung from the ceiling with ropes secured to the handles at each end of the waka huia. This waka huia was carved in Rotorua from a single piece of wood and features a carved lid.
